The Department of Linguistics and Philology conducts research and education in a number of different languages and language-related subjects and forms an international environment. The department's activities cover many of the classical and contemporary languages and cultures of large areas of Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as computational linguistics and linguistics. Education is offered at the basic level, advanced level and postgraduate level.
The Department of Linguistics and Philology is looking for an associate senior lecturer in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics. Research in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics is currently conducted within the main subject area Linguistics in collaboration with the main subject area Indology. Linguistics is a main subject area that includes education at basic-, advanced- and postgraduate level. The subject participates in the Bachelor's Programme in Languages, Speech and Language Pathology Programme, and the Master's Programme in Languages. The subject's current research areas include Historical Linguistics and Linguistic Diversity, Language Documentation and Typology, as well as Child Language Development and Second Language Learning. Indology is a main subject area that includes education at basic-, advanced- and postgraduate level. The subject's current research areas include Indology, Hindi/Urdu and Comparative Indo-European Linguistics. Furthermore, the research area of Historical Linguistics collaborates with Archeology and Genetics in the interdisciplinary center of excellence Center for the Human Past (https://www.vr.se/swecris.html?project=2022-06620_VR). The Center for the Human Past links the three research areas of Archaeology, Genetics and Linguistics, all of which investigate different aspects of human development over the past 10,000 years.

Duties
The purpose of the appointment is for the teacher to be given the opportunity to develop his/her independence as a researcher and merit both scientifically and pedagogically in order to meet the requirements for eligibility for employment as a senior lecturer. The duties include research within the current subject area of 50% as well as teaching at all levels and administration of a maximum of 50%. Teaching also includes supervision, course responsibility, course administration and course development. The duties also include chairing the tradition of Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at the department as well as collaborating with and strengthening the department’s research groups in Linguistics and Indology and the interdisciplinary center of excellence Center for the Human Past regarding the development of courses and research collaborations. As an associate senior lecturer, the appointee is expected to actively apply for external research funding and follow developments within their own subject area, as well as participate in the faculty's and department's pedagogical and scientific development work.
Required qualifications
A person who has completed a doctorate or has achieved the equivalent scientific competence, demonstrated pedagogical skill and has the personal qualities required to fulfill the position well is qualified for employment as an associate senior lecturer. Primarily applicants who have completed a doctorate or have achieved equivalent competence no more than five years before the end of the application period are considered. For this position, a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence in Linguistics, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics or another related field related to Historical Linguistics is required. A prerequisite for pedagogical skills to be considered fulfilled is the completion of higher education pedagogical training relevant to the subject area covering at least five weeks, or equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the higher education pedagogical training can be completed during the first two years of employment. Documented ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement. An applicant who cannot teach in Swedish at the time of application is expected to be able to use Swedish as a working language within two years. The applicant must have the personal qualities required to perform the job well. Such personal qualities in this case are flexibility, cooperation ability and responsibility.
The scientific competence, teaching expertise, personal characteristics and professional skills must be relevant to the subject matter of the position and the duties that the position will involve.
Assessment criteria
When selecting among eligible applicants, particular weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical expertise. The examination of pedagogical expertise will be given the same amount of care as the examination of research expertise.
As a merit-based position, the scientific and pedagogical merits of the applicants will be assessed primarily in terms of quality. A quantitative advantage of an applicant that can be explained by the fact that the applicant has been active for a longer period of time, shall not counted as decisive.
Scientific expertise: In assessing research expertise, research quality in the subject area of the position will be the primary consideration. The scope of the research, in terms primarily of its depth and breadth, will also be taken into account. Of particular importance will be historical language research that has been conducted using the methods of comparative-historical linguistics as well as those relating to human prehistory in collaboration with genetics and archaeology. In addition, weight will be given to the documented ability to interact both within science and with wider society.
Pedagogical expertise: Pedagogical expertise refers to educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing pedagogical expertise, pedagogical quality will be the primary consideration. The extent of the teaching, both breadth and depth, will also be given importance. In the assessing the teaching expertise, special emphasis will be placed on the ability to teach Sanskrit as well as documented experience in interdisciplinary courses relating to genetics and/or archaeology. In addition to academic teaching, educational and teaching qualifications from other activities, which include, for example, supervision, internal training or mentoring programmes, will be taken into account.
Other expertise: Administrative expertise is demonstrated inter alia through the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and appropriate way, as well as through the ability to specify and keep time frames. The expertise includes overall activity planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the priorities of the subject area, as well as the ability to work in a structured manner and with an awareness of goals and quality.
In this recruitment, the university will primarily consider those who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the tasks concerned and to contribute to the positive development of the subject area.
Appointment Period
The position can be held for a maximum of six years. An associate senior lecturer can apply for promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted to and employed as senior lecturer.

About the position
