PhD students in Cultural Anthropology
The department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology conducts education and research on many of the complex contexts that characterize today´s globalized world. The department has about 40 employees. We are a strong research driven environment having two prominent research environments that include professors, researchers, postdoctoral researchers and several doctoral students. At the department, undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate courses are available in cultural anthropology and ethnology are taught in Uppsala. Duties
Education at the research level has a duration of four years, financed with employment as PhD candidate. PhD candidates are expected to carry out their education at the research level by working full time and by participating actively in the activities of the department. Obligatory administrative and teaching duties at the department may not exceed 20% of full-time.

Requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have

  • completed a second-cycle degree in Cultural/Social Anthropology or equivalent merits,
    or
  • completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, including an independent project of at least 15 credits with Cultural/Social Anthropology as the main subject,
    or
  • have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.

Education at the research level in Cultural Anthropology is regulated by the general study plan. Other than the general entry requirements a Master Degree in Cultural Anthropology or equivalent merits, is required for this position. The selection process will consider the applicant’s capacity to complete the education at the research level. This capacity is judged based upon the applicant’s research plan and how this plan relates to existing research at the department. The research plan must describe how fieldwork for the proposed project is to be carried out. In addition, publications and student essays are important when judging an applicant’s ability to follow and benefit from the doctoral program. The ability to express oneself in both written and spoken English is considered important.

  • Application form and a verified copy of a degree certificate that proves the applicant’s eligibility for studies at the research level in Cultural Anthropology;
  • a brief CV;
  • a copy of the MA thesis within the discipline of Anthropology or an equivalent degree;
  • an outline for the proposed research plan/project in English (of max. 5 pages);
  • other publications or relevant documents, if any, that support the application.

The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 September or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
