Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to ecosystem studies. Learn more at www.ieg.uu.se.

The field station of the department, the Erken Laboratory (https://www.ieg.uu.se/erkenlaboratoriet/), has extensive activities aimed at school students. The core of these activities are the “Water Days” where children from pre-school to high school age can learn about water and environmental issues. The purpose of the water days is to give students the opportunity to gain knowledge of concepts and methods in biology (with a focus on ecology), as well as the scientific method, in both theory and practice. We also organize a 3-week long research school for high school students. The Erken Laboratory also acts as a node for the university’s collaboration activities related water and sustainability (UU Vattensamverkan). One of the goals of the UU Vattensamverkan initiative is to strengthen and develop outreach activities targeting schools that are carried out at the Erken Laboratory.

We are now looking for a project assistant for our outreach activities.

Duties
The holder of the position will carry out educational activities for schools at the Erken Laboratory. This includes planning and conducting field studies or experiments, as well as analysis and discussion of the resulting data. Specific tasks include supervising students during fieldwork and subsequent sample and data analysis, giving introductory presentations, leading discussion seminars and preparing the work. In addition to that, working duties include the development of new elements in the water day activities and other related activities aimed at schools. Other tasks that arise at the field station might also be part of the position to a lesser extent.

Requirements
University degree (BS/MSc) in biology or related disciplines relevant for the position. Knowledge of ecology and aquatic environments. Interest in educational activities and outreach aimed at schools. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as initiative, flexibility, openness, ability to work structured, ability to work both independently as part of a team, and to lead groups. Because the duties involve many contacts with students, teachers and teachers/researchers, you need to be communicative and service-oriented. Candidates must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English and/or Swedish.

Qualifications desired
Documented knowledge of limnology/aquatic ecology and species identification of e.g. plankton or benthic invertebrates. Experience of field work, especially in lakes. Previous experience of working with children and teenagers, especially outdoor educational work. Experience in leading groups. Experience of web publishing and communication work.
