PhD student in immunotherapy against neuroblastoma

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro biology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. Duties

Yumeng Mao’s research group aims to dissect the negative immune regulatory network in immune cells and cancer cells to uncover novel mechanisms that could broaden the clinical benefits of cancer immunotherapy. We will achieve this by combining our pre-clinical research expertise in cancer immunology with the pioneering technology platforms at the SciLifeLab. A strong technical focus will be developing experimental tools using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. In particular for the project, we have a special interest in understanding the interaction between the human immune system and high-risk neuroblastoma cancer cells. The project could generate important information to assist the development of novel therapies for patients. Requirements

We search for a motivated and knowledge candidate who has strong scientific merits on the relevant research topic regarding cancer immunology and high-risk neuroblastoma. Experiences in handling primary immune cells and advanced flow cytometry is a required. The candidate must be proficient in the English language, both written and orally. The candidate needs to have proven experiences on CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technique and advanced co-culture assays using human immune cells and cancer cells. Other required hands-on experiences are western blotting, ELISA, handling of blood products, cell sorting and culture, as well as in vitro and in vivo assays to assess anti-tumor immunity. We expect the candidate to have a certificate and extensive experience to work with laboratory animals. It is considered a merit if the candidate has demonstrated prior experience in investigating immune response against neuroblastoma.

The candidate needs to be proficient in using scientific software including Graphpad, FlowJo, EndNote. The best candidate needs to be a good team player but also work effectively as an individual.

To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Molecular Medicine, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits
