Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Are you interested in working with the phenomenology of Higgs and gravitational wave physics in the early universe, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position in the phenomenology of Higgs and gravitational wave physics in the early universe at Uppsala University.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. See https://physics.uu.se for more departmental information.

This position is part of a new initiative within Uppsala University fostering interdisciplinary research in the broad strength area of  “The universe and mathematical physics,” which encompasses a wide spectrum of disciplines, such as mathematics, theoretical physics, high energy physics, nuclear physics as well as observational and theoretical astrophysics: see https://www.uu.se/en/disciplinary-domain/science-and-technology/research/our-research-strengths for more information.

The successful candidate will work between the Theoretical High Energy Physics (THEP) group, https://physics.uu.se/research/high-energy-physics/research-groups/thep (part of the High Energy Physics division), and the Theoretical Physics (TP) division, https://www.physics.uu.se/research/theoretical-physics. THEP consists at present of three senior faculty members, four postdocs, one PhD student and two long-term visitors, while the activity in TP currently consists of one senior faculty member, one postdoc and one PhD student, together with several other related research activities within the division.

The present postdoc position profile will be aligned with the THEP research interests in the areas of Electro-Weak (EW) and Higgs physics, theories Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) and electroweak phase transitions, as well as with research interests in gravitational waves, cosmology and string theory present in the TP division. Another postdoctoral researcher will be recruited concurrently with this position in overlapping research areas.

Duties
You will perform theoretical and computational research in the described research areas. The duties include production of new research results, presenting these in publications and talks, and collaborating with the other members of the research group.

Requirements
PhD degree in physics, theoretical physics, particle physics or similar, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in these subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. These should be clearly indicated in the application.

Advanced theoretical physics knowledge, in particular in quantum field theory and general relativity, is necessary. Experience of particle physics or astroparticle physics phenomenology and/or cosmology are required.

Additional qualifications
Competence in numerical approaches to the physics processes of interest would be advantageous.

Applications should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, a CV as well as a list of publications.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 2024-09-01 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
