The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration and vascular biology. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. Duties
The research group is studying the Ras-like family of Rho GTPases, which are key regulators of the actin filament system and thereby control vital cellular processes such as cell morphogenesis, cell polarity and cell migration. The research is aimed to elucidate the Rho-dependent signalling mechanisms in health and disease. The project is focused on the role of the so-called atypical Rho GTPases, which is a subclass of the Rho GTPases, in rare cancers, such as malignant mesothelioma. The project will involve cell biology and imaging methods but also omics-techniques, such as proteomics and transcriptomics, as well as bioinformatics. The principal goal is to elucidate the mechanisms behind the derailed function of atypical Rho GTPases in cancer cell migration and metastasis and to identify new targets for drug treatment. The applicant will be able to act as a supervisor for students doing thesis or temporary project work in the group. The applicant will moreover participate in group-wide activities such as lab meetings, journal clubs etc. The applicant is expected to work independently to plan and conduct experiments and analyses within the specified research area.

Requirements
PhD degree in molecular cell biology or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in molecular cell biology. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
The applicant should have a strong background in molecular cell biology with a focus on cancer. The project requires that the applicant has excellent laboratory skills and is familiar with computational analysis of experimental data. Examples of methods with which the applicant must have solid experience include advanced microscopy analysis such as fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy and live cell imaging. The applicant should also have good knowledge in image analysis, morphometric analysis of cells. Applicants should also have general skills in common lab work such as cell culture, bacterial culture, DNA analysis, protein analysis. Knowledge of bioinformatics is an advantage.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement, with the posibility of 1 year extension Full time position. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
