PhD position in History
The Department of History at Uppsala University is announcing a PhD position in Holocaust history and memory culture in collaboration with the National Historical Museums, which includes the Swedish Holocaust Museum.
The Department of History is a dynamic research environment at Uppsala University, with a particular emphasis on early modern history, gender history, digital humanities, research on racism, antisemitism, Holocaust and genocide studies: see http://www.hist.uu.se. The department has some 80 teachers and researchers, and 800 students.
The Departments of History at Uppsala and Stockholm Universities collaborate closely, and the PhD program is, to a high degree, jointly taught. Applicants are encouraged to avail themselves of the information concerning the PhD program on the departments’ websites. http://www.hist.uu.se/utbildning/forskarutbildning-/forskarskola-i-historia/
The PhD position will be placed at the Hugo Valentin Centre (HVC), which is an interdisciplinary unit at the Department of History specialising in the field of Holocaust and genocide studies. Research at the HVC covers the Holocaust, other cases of genocide and similar systematic violations of human rights, as well as the effects of violence on individuals and society. Information about the center can be found at https://www.valentin.uu.se/?languageId=1
As a doctoral student, you will also be part of the research milieu at the Governmental Agency National Historical Museums (NHM) and the Swedish Holocaust Museum, which is part of the agency. The museum agency NHM provides a unique environment for exploring and discussing, among other things, collections, stories, minorities, cultural heritage, power, memory, and identity, in relation to Sweden and the Holocaust. For further information see: museumforintelsen.se, and shm.se.
We, in collaboration with NHM, welcome project applications that focus on the events during the Holocaust linked to Sweden. We especially welcome applicants who are interested in making use of Swedish and international museum collections in some form, such as the collections of the Swedish Holocaust Museum. It is considered a merit if the applicant can prove that he has some knowledge of working with different types of historical sources. It is also a merit to have an interest and preferably also experience in teamwork.
Duties
Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and are expected to participate actively in weekly seminars, workshops and other activities. They will also be required to spend part of their time at the Swedish Holocaust Museum in Stockholm.
The position is a 4-year full-time employment (starting salary is currently 30 700 SEK/month) which qualifies for all Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. It might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20 percent of a full-time, resulting in a maximal extension of one year (totaling five years full-time equivalent).
Requirements
To be eligible, the applicant must have obtained a Master’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences relevant to the field of Holocaust and genocide studies. A person who has otherwise acquired broadly corresponding knowledge, in or outside Sweden, may also meet the specific entry requirements (cf. SFS 2006:1053, Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 40). The specific entry requirement is a completed Master’s (one- or two-year) degree in history, or another relevant main subject area. The PhD programme is taught in both Swedish and English, although some compulsory courses are given in Swedish only. We encourage international applicants, who will be provided with an opportunity to learn Swedish during their studies. Swedish and English are the working languages at the Department of History.
Regulations for doctoral students are available in Chapter 5, Sections 1-7 of the Higher Education Ordinance, as well as in the university’s regulations and guidelines. See also: https://www.hist.uu.se/digitalAssets/644/c_644550-l_3-k_antagningsordning-sufo-version-febr2020.pdf
