Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences

Bioinformatician with focus on translational metabolic research

Temporary position

The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 900 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The Department of Medical Sciences has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More information about the Department of Medical Sciences can be found at www.medsci.uu.se

The Clinical Diabetology and Metabolism research group conducts clinical as well as cellular and molecular biology research, focusing on type 2 diabetes and obesity. We have well established multidisciplinary collaborations both locally (e.g. Uppsala Diabetes Centre) and nationally/internationally (e.g. EU Horizon program).

Duties
Type 2 diabetes is a growing public health issue globally. Our focus revolves around the critical role of obesity in type 2 diabetes, with specific emphasis on adipose tissue and its intricate interactions with other organs, particularly the brain. We utilize various methods ranging from "omics" analyses to cellular and molecular techniques, imaging in vitro and in vivo, and clinical trials.

This position is focused on applying bioinformatics tools for projects aimed at advancing our understanding of type 2 diabetes through two main approaches: i) investigating the link between obesity and the development of metabolic complications, ii) exploring new mechanisms and interventions, including diet, drugs and obesity surgery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advanced data analysis using bioinformatics tools
  • Analyzing omics data from tissue and blood samples
  • Employing statistical methods to derive meaningful insights from large scale datasets

The primary focus of the position is to provide crucial bioinformatics support to ongoing and future projects, by integrating and interpreting diverse large datasets, and collaborating with interdisciplinary team members, including scientists, research nurses, and physicians. The applicant will also actively contribute to study designs, protocol and methodology development, as well as contribute to scientific reports.

Other central aspects of the position are continuous learning and skill development, effective communication of findings, quality assurance, and contributing to research grant applications.

Requirements
Completed PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree, within the field of biomedicine. Extensive experience and competence in bioinformatics analysis, and documented experience of research on metabolic diseases. Proficiency in R or STATA, along with a fundamental understanding of basic molecular biology. Scientific merits in the form of publications after receiving the PhD degree.

Special emphasis is put on personal qualities such as planning, organizational and collaboration skills. The applicant should be thorough and responsible, have a high standard of research ethics, and ability to work independently. In addition, the ability to convey research results through both oral and written communication is important.

Our research environment is international, with English as the primary working language, and proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement.

Additional qualifications

Knowledge within the following fields:

  • Analysis and reporting of omics data
  • Programming
  • Genetic epidemiology (e.g. GWAS)
  • Large-scale epidemiological databases
