PhD student in Historical geology and Palaeontology, with a focus on marine micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography
Are you interested in working with research within marine micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a PhD student position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind with approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge.
A four-year PhD position in Historical geology and Palaeontology, with a focus on marine micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography, is available at the Department of Earth Sciences. Within the Palaeobiology Programme, we provide education and conduct research across the interface between the Earth and Life Sciences, encompassing the time span from the origin of life to the significant climatic changes of recent millenia. Please visit: www.geo.uu.se for more information about the department.
Duties
This project will investigate the impacts of prolonged ocean warmth on phytoplankton composition, their biogeographical distribution and past productivity using scientific ocean drilling legacy data and drill-sites. You will study the fossil remains of marine algae from the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO; 16.9-14.7 Ma), the warmest climate state of the past 24 million years. Detailed studies of the MCO are important for constraining future warming scenarios, because it was a time interval of sustained global warmth under moderately high atmospheric CO2 levels (400-600 ppm) and a much weaker latitudinal temperature gradient than today. Biogenic sediment burial rates and nannofossil assemblage data will form the backbone of this project. Data will be mined from existing IODP datasets and new, high-resolution fossil time series will be produced at key sites from low- and high latitudes. Empirical results will be compared to global biogeochemical and climate model simulations of the MCO, run by colleagues at the University of Michigan, to mutually verify and validate our independent findings.
Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must
We are seeking a motivated candidate with keen interest in (marine) micropalaeontology and microscopy, marine geology/biology, palaeoceanography, and/or palaeoecology. A high level in oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as proficiencies in computational and programming skills. The candidate is expected to be able to work independently but also within a larger team of scientists.
Additional qualifications
Evidence of good scientific writing skills is a merit, and the ranking of the candidates will also accord weight to evidence of analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. Experience in microscopy, biometry and statistical methods as well as knowledge of marine microfossils/phytoplankton are welcomed. The ability to work with R or MATLAB is advantageous.
The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies.
The application should contain a Curriculum Vitae; a verified list of course grades and copies of degree certificates; a cover letter stating your scientific interests and what motivates you to apply for this position; your degree project/thesis (finished or in draft form); contact details (incl. email and telephone number) of two references.
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
