Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

PhD student in geophysics - Fingerprinting of Strategic Minerals: Integration and Data Mining of Large Data Sets in Rock Physics, Geochemistry and Geochronology

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind with approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge. Please visit: www.geo.uu.se for more information about the department.

Geophysics concerns the understanding of Earth’s present and past structure and dynamics using methods based on measurements and models of Earth’s physical properties. In geophysics we use quantitative physical methods to investigate the Earth and its environment.

Duties
The PhD candidate will conduct research within the topic of data mining of petrophysical, geophysical, geochemical and geochronological data, using survey data bases from Sweden, Finland and Norway. The candidate will work at the interface between geosciences and information technology, with a focus on using methods in computation, statistics and large data handling. As such, the PhD candidate will be supervised by a team from the Department of Earth Sciences and the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University. The candidate is expected to work closely together with the geological surveys of Sweden, Finland and Norway, with possible extended (several weeks) visits to the respective surveys of these countries.

Research funding organizations include the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) through the recently established Smart Exploration Research Centre for sustainable and responsible exploration of critical raw materials. The PhD candidate will work within a larger research team including experts from different institutions and companies partnered in the research centre.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in geophysics, geology, physics, data science or a similar field, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

We are seeking excellent and motivated candidates with strong interest in research. A high level in oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as proficiencies in computational and programming skills. The candidate is expected to be able to work within a larger team of scientists.

Additional qualifications
Experience in working with programming and data processing are important and will be considered a merit.

The position is full-time for four years and may be extended due to research or teaching assistantship up to 20%. Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
