The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest with nearly 400 employees, of which about 125 are PhD students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. The research is carried out at 10 research divisions and concerns everything from the unimaginably small to the large in areas such as energy supply, climate change, new materials and the universe. This entire spectrum is also reflected in the department's courses and educational programs. Around 2,500 students study undergraduate and graduate-level courses at the department every year. Duties
You will be working at the Division of Applied Nuclear Physics, where you will develop and implement methods from the machine learning area in algorithms for applied nuclear physics with relevance to current and future nuclear energy applications. The work will include the use of nuclear physics codes and the management of experimental databases. The aim is to develop new nuclear data libraries with high relevance to the operation of nuclear facilities, strong coupling to fundamental physical phenomena, high predictive power, and adequate uncertainty management. Your work will be linked to the European research program APRENDE (Addressing PRiorities of Evaluated Nuclear Data in Europe), EUROfusion WP-BB, Swedish Nuclear Center (SKC), and SSM (Swedish Radiation Safety Authority). We have intensive co-operation with international researchers in Europe and the USA, and the work may occasionally be located elsewhere. Supervision of doctoral projects and teaching may be included in the duties.
Requirements
Doctoral degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, or nuclear engineering. Well-documented merits in physics, programming, and statistics. Scientific expertise in the subject area of the position and the tasks to be included in the position. Good communication skills in English and co-operation skills are required.
Additional qualifications
Experience in the field of nuclear data evaluation is highly meritorious. Experience in machine learning; statistics; reactor physics; experimental nuclear data; neutron and gamma measurements and modeling; and nuclear physics is highly desirable. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the doctoral level, obtain funding for research, and a demonstrated ability to interact both within science and with the surrounding society is considered important. Experience of teaching in English and Swedish is a merit. Collaboration and administrative skills will be given some weight.
In the selection of qualified applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific expertise.
