The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 290 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website: https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1
Duties
The research will be conducted within the program for Molecular Biomimetics. Our activities span a wide area from biophysics and advanced spectroscopy, to synthetic and microbial chemistry, with particular emphasis on light-induced electron transfer reactions and production of solar fuel and solar products. We study and manipulate mechanisms in redox-active enzymes and redirect metabolism in photosynthetic, nitrogen-fixing and hydrogen-metabolizing organisms. These studies form the basis for preparing organometallic molecules and materials, which have structural or catalytic properties that mimic the active sites of enzymes. We also have strong competence in method development for studies and modelling of electro- and biocatalytic reactions.
As a researcher, you will be part of a research environment that develops and applies theoretical models at the molecular orbital level for studies of transition metal catalysts. You will be expected to engage in developing predictable machine learning models for designing novel catalysts and streamlined computational protocols to model reaction mechanisms. The designed catalysts shall, in collaboration, be synthesized and their performance characterized to allow the development of second-generation catalysts. An important goal is to achieve bio-inspired design of economical electrocatalysts for ammonia production.
Additional work tasks at the department, such as teaching and administration, will be included.
Requirements
For employment, a doctorate in chemistry, physics or equivalent, as well as at least two years of postdoctoral training are required. Applicants must have demonstrated scientific skill through scientific publications and presentations at national and international conferences. Applicants must also have documented ability to obtain their own research grants. We seek a candidate who has documented experience spanning various fields, including homogeneous and heterogeneous metal catalysis and materials chemistry. Extensive competence is expected in studying reaction mechanisms of molecules within complex environments, developing multi-scale computational protocols/approaches, and applying cutting-edge electronic-structure methods. The candidate must have an excellent ability to interact with experimentalists, and must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English.
Additional qualifications
A doctorate in computational/theoretical chemistry is recommended. Experience in empirical valence bond theory, machine learning, supramolecular chemistry, enzyme catalysis and/or redox chemistry is considered a merit.
