Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website. (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1).

The host group is strongly involved in research on –combinations of– electronic structure methods (DFT, ab initio and semi-empirical), advanced atomistic (reactive) force fields and kinetic modelling. A range of applications involving interface chemistry, redox properties, energy materials and intermolecular interactions are being explored. The announced position is part of a new Horizon Europe Pathfinder project which will deal with cellulose-aqueous interfaces but also other functional interfaces will be in focus in the project. We collaborate with the University of Cambridge and the University of Toronto on the development of machine-learning potentials and property prediction of energy-relevant materials and molecules.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a postdoctoral position is to conduct research. The focus of the current research project is both data harvesting and database management as well as physics-based simulations to explore interface phenomena. The data-driven work aims to extract relations that are difficult to obtain from experiment (i.e. insight) but also to predict interface properties. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students will be encouraged.

Requirements
For employment as a postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. In certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, work in trade unions, etc. The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance will be attached to the quality of individual scientific work than to the number of publications.

The applicant is expected to:

  • have a solid background in quantum chemistry modelling of molecules and periodic systems (materials and/or liquids)
  • possess at least moderate skills in the application of machine learning to scientific problems
  • possess good working skills in programming/ scripting, data handling and interoperability
  • have some experience with atomistic (force-field) models, MD simulations and multi-scale modelling
  • have a very good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
