We are now looking for a PhD student to join a research group in the international frontline of treatment research focusing on autologous blood stem cell transplantation as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that affects one thousand individuals in Sweden every year and is one of the most common causes leading to disability in people of working age. MS is an autoimmune disease where the immune system is attacking the brain and spinal cord. Autologous blood stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for MS. The aim of this treatment is to ablate the immune system with cytotoxic agents and then build up a new and hopefully healthy immune system with the aid of hematopoietic stem cells. Our research group has been active in the field for more than 15 years and is today one of the world leaders in the field. We have close collaboration with expertise from other departments at Uppsala University, including the Department of immunology, genetics and pathology, the Department of pharmaceutical biosciences and the Department of surgical sciences, but also other universities such as Karolinska Institutet and The Sahlgrenska Academy. With our research, we want to increase our knowledge of how treatment with AHSCT works and find ways to predict which patients will benefit the most from the treatment.

Duties
The work will be based on register data and analyzes of biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Together with other PhD students, you will analyze this data to generate new knowledge about MS and treatment with AHSCT. Teaching up to 20% may be included in the position.

Requirements
To qualify for the position, you must have a degree (M.D.) from a medical school in the EU, EEA countries or the United Kingdom. We would like you to be responsible, well organized and able to work independently. You should have good communication skills and be able to collaborate with others. You also need to have good oral and written English skills to be able to collect and interpret data and to be able to publish results internationally.

Additional qualifications
Previous experience in neurological research and statistical programming is of merit.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
