Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a researcher position in ion beam-based thin film physics.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over nine divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 100 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. Duties
A successful applicant is expected to work in basic and applied research on thin film system, particularly towards energy materials. The candidate is expected to employ keV and MeV ion beams as both analytical tool and means for materials modification. Engagement in developing advanced data analysis is expected. Applied research conducted mainly for ultra-thin film systems of relevance in electronics, optics, for hard coatings and in related interdisciplinary projects can be part of the working duties. Taking over responsibilities in collaboration projects with industry is anticipated. Supervision of undergraduate and PhD-student projects can be part of the working duties. Teaching can be part of the working duties.

The major ion beam facilities at the Tandem laboratory at Uppsala University comprise of a 5 MV tandem accelerator, a 200 kV MICADAS compact radiocarbon dating system, ion implantation facilities with three beam lines as well as a system for low-energy ion scattering. There are a number of thin film deposition systems available, as is other complementary characterization methods such as X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.

Requirements
PhD degree in Physics, engineering or comparable field or a foreign degree equivalent to such a PhD degree. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Experience in thin film synthesis and modification is mandatory. Well-documented research experience using ion beams and handling ion beam instrumentation for material research, fundamental studies or materials modifications is expected.

Additional qualifications
A good fundamental understanding of ion-solid interaction is advantageous. It is expected that the successful candidate has the personal capabilities necessary to fully carry out the duties of the appointment.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years but may be extended to a total of 3 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala

About the application
The application should contain a letter describing the applicant and her/his qualifications and research interests. It should contain a CV, copies of relevant degrees, contact information for at least two reference persons, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.
