Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Are you interested in working with superconducting accelerator technology, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is looking for a researcher who will work with particle accelerators. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the largest at Uppsala University with around 400 employees, and is located in the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The department includes the FREIA laboratory, which works with research and development on particle accelerators and instrumentation. FREIA collaborates with large research facilities, such as ESS in Lund and CERN in Switzerland, and contributes through the development of particle accelerators and its equipment. FREIA is currently at the starting point of a new large-scope project involving tests of superconducting radiofrequency cavities and cryomodules, which will later be installed in a new proton accelerator, MINERVA, in Belgium. The successful candidate will work with these tests as well as conduct activities linked to superconducting accelerator magnets.

Applicants are offered the opportunity to work in an exciting, modern research environment and will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading groups in experimental and theoretical physics both locally and globally.

Duties

  • Participate in the work of acceptance testing of accelerator equipment for the MINERVA project.
  • Participate in the work of designing, building and using test setups and equipment.
  • Coordinate the work with testing superconducting accelerator magnets, as well as preparing for such tests.
  • Document the work.
  • Report on the work within the FREIA laboratory and present results to external partners and at international conferences.

Requirements
The following experiences, knowledge and abilities are a requirement to succeed in the role:

  • Doctoral degree in physics, engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience from and deep knowledge in applied superconductivity.
  • Experience from and knowledge in the use of liquid helium and cryogenics.
  • Practical experience from working with superconducting accelerator components.
  • Very good oral and written skills in English.

Additional qualifications
The following experiences and knowledge are an asset:

  • Experience of working with radio frequency equipment, such as cavities and amplifiers.
  • Broad experience in using advanced measurement equipment (oscilloscope, VNA, spectrum analyzer, etc.).
  • Experience and knowledge in vacuum technology.
  • Knowledge of accelerator physics and technology.
