Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time position for two years, starting as soon as possible or as agreed upon

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering  at Ångström Laboratory offers an innovative and international research environment capable of addressing technical and societal challenges both now and in the future. The department comprises eight research divisions, including Myfab, the cleanroom-based research infrastructure.

At the Division of Applied Materials Science, research is conducted in the areas of sustainable and medical materials as well as material analysis techniques. A key technique in materials analysis is electron microscopy.

The electron microscopy group has developed techniques to analyze energy materials, soft materials, and materials for medical applications to correlate the local structure and electronic structure as well as the chemical composition with the material's properties. The group has developed methods in electron spectroscopy, 3D electron tomography, and nano-structuring, which will be further developed in the project. State-of-the-art simulation and statistical methods are used to interpret and evaluate experimental data.

Research Project
The project is focused on developing more resource-efficient battery concepts with higher energy storage density by creating new and optimal electrolytes for "solid-state" batteries through experimental work and atomic-scale analysis.

The project is a collaboration with the program for Structural Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström, which hosts Sweden's largest academic battery research environment: the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre. The project will elaborate on state-of-the-art battery materials used by and developed in the battery group in the program for Structural Chemistry.

Duties
The work duties  in this project include analyzing "solid-state" battery structures using advanced TEM imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy techniques. The focus is on electrolyte materials made of ceramics and polymers. Battery components are analyzed in in-operando experiments in the TEM.

In addition to research, the work duties include supervision of doctoral students and project students, as well as communicating  research results through scientific articles in well-established scientific journals and presentations at international conferences.  Some involvment in teaching may also be included. You are also expected to contribute to applications for external research funding.

Qualification Requirements: PhD degree  or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree.  The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

For this position, a doctoral degree in engineering physics, materials science, chemistry, nanotechnology, or a related field is required. We require several years of competence and experience in transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with specific expertise in 1) quantitative electron microscopy and 2) aberration-corrected TEM.

We require good oral and written English skills.

Additional qualifications
Documented knowledge and experience in battery research. Documented knowledge and experience in electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and the ability to develop EM techniques.

We place great importance on your personal qualities, and you must be self-driven, capable of leading and managing projects, and able to collaborate with other researchers. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured, and can work efficiently both independently and in a group.

Special consideration will be given to the applicant's ability to publish scientific papers in high-quality journals and present at scientific meetings.

Application Instructions
Your application should include:

  • A brief letter describing yourself and why you are suitable for this position
  • CV (maximum 2 pages)
  • List of publications
  • Copy of your doctoral degree
  • Names and contact information (address, email, and phone number) for at least two reference persons

The application can be written in English

During the application period, we will continuously review applications and invite candidates for interviews.
