Project description
Electrification is vital for a successful transition to a sustainable, fossil-free society. However, capacity bottlenecks in the electric grid threatens to slow down the transition towards a more sustainable energy system. This project aims at contributing towards the development of smart, safe and resilient energy communities in part by developing a framework for microgrid management based on real load models together with privacy-preserving machine learning methods. The proposed methods will be demonstrated at Dansmästaren, a test bed for research on smart EV charging and energy management, located in Uppsala.

The research group at Uppsala University has extensive experience on research in energy systems and a large laboratory activity. The research team is led by a Professor and includes a senior researcher and three PhD students. They work together and meet regularly. This position also includes close collaboration with a PhD candidate at the Division of Signals and Systems. The project includes collaboration with industrial partners such as Volvo Cars, CEVT, E.ON, and Vattenfall.

The Department of Electrical Engineering gives a salary supplement to the PhD Students at the department. Read more about our benefits and what it is like to work at Uppsala University

Duties
From the research project viewpoint, the doctoral student together with the research team will work on modelling the production and consumption loads at Dansmästaren. Moreover, the student will work on data collection and develop data collection interfaces as well as implement a safe cloud-side service for model aggregation and coordination. Furthermore, the candidate will participate in the demonstration and evaluation of the deployed system in a real environment.

The work as a doctoral student also includes writing scientific publications and presenting their research results orally in various contexts such as project group meetings and international conferences. The main task of a doctoral student is to devote to the doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The course component is 60 credits and the majority of the courses are optional and can be spread out throughout the doctoral period. The duties also include participating in teaching, for example by holding calculation exercises or supervising labs / project work. Teaching and other institutional duties make up a maximum of 20% of the working time.

Requirements
The applicant must:

  • hold a master degree in electrical engineering, information technology, engineering physics, and energy systems engineering or similar,
  • have very good oral and written proficiency in English,
  • have personal qualities such as strong motivation, good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers. You should be focused, structured and be able to work effectively both individually and in groups.

Also, merits are:

  • good oral and written proficiency in Swedish,
  • experience with programming and calculation tools, like MATLAB and/or Python,
  • hands-on experience with experimental and lab work is a merit.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
