Statistician in psychiatric epidemiology

The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 900 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The Department of Medical Sciences has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. The position is placed within the research group psychiatric epidemiology and gender dysphoria led by Senior Lecturer Fotis Papadopoulos. https://www.medsci.uu.se/forskning/psykiatri/projekt/psykiatrisk-epidemiologi/). Our group aims to advance healthcare and improve the prognosis for people with psychiatric diagnoses, through increased knowledge about the etiology and the consequences of the diagnoses in terms of physical and mental health.

We use a broad range of state-of-the-art research methods, from qualitative methods and traditional statistical analyses to machine learning in our effort to answer different research questions. Data collection is, also, broad and includes interviews, self-reported questionnaire data, register data, biological material and digital phenotyping through mobile app applications.

We are currently focusing on studies about gender dysphoria and peripartum depression.

We are looking for a statistician who can join our research team, either newly graduated or with more experience. If you are newly graduated, you will be mentored by our current statistician. If you have more experience, you will work more independently. The work will be conducted at the Department of Medical Sciences, Psychiatry, Uppsala University Hospital.

Duties

  • Offer statistical advice to medical researchers and supervise Master’s and PhD students.
  • Perform all statistical tasks in the creation of a peer-reviewed scientific article:
    • o Receival of registry data.
    • o Data cleaning.
    • o Data analysis.
    • o Writing methods and results sections of the peer-reviewed scientific article.
  • Attend group meetings and engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, understanding the language and needs of different academic fields.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a statistics-heavy discipline (e.g. statistics, biostatistics).
  • Advanced R programming skills.
  • Experience in traditional statistical methods.

Additional qualifications

  • PhD in a statistics-heavy discipline (e.g. statistics, biostatistics).
  • Python programming skills.
  • Experience in machine learning.
  • Experience in running analyses for peer-reviewed scientific articles.
  • Experience in writing peer-reviewed scientific articles.
  • Experience in statistics used for medical research (e.g. cohort studies, registry studies, matching).
  • Experience in providing statistical advice in a multidisciplinary team.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
