Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

Uppsala University’s tenure track system grants assistant professors the possibility to be assessed for promotion to the position as associate professor. The university provides support in various areas, such as scientific and educational development, leadership development as well as patent and innovation support.

Department of Chemistry – Ångström at Uppsala University conducts research and education in the field of chemistry. The Department has more than 270 employees and a turnover of just over 300 million SEK. The six research programs, within the very well-equipped Ångström laboratory, have a leading research position at a high international standard. We have a large number of externally financed research projects, often with international collaborations and we foresee a continued growth within our discipline. The research output of the department generated commercial interest and led to the foundation of several start-up and spin-off companies and a close collaboration with the industry. The Department provides education for engineering and master programs.

The research program Macromolecular Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström has research mainly directed towards macromolecules, polymers and soft materials with examples of applications mainly in life science but also in energy. We synthesize and characterize new macromolecules and polymeric materials and evaluate them for specific applications. In our work, we emphasize a creative environment characterized by excellence, diversity, generosity and freedom. We are currently under expansion and need reinforcement with competence in macromolecular and soft material physics.

Description of the subject area of employment
Macromolecular chemistry treats the recovery, synthesis, modification and degradation of naturally occurring and synthetically derived polymers along with their physical, biological and chemical properties. The terminology “Macromolecule” is used for individual molecules of high molecular weight and “polymer” is used to denote a substance composed of macromolecules. The program has excellent skills in synthesis and aims now to reinforce competence in the field of macromolecular and polymer physics including e.g. studies of structure-property relationships.

Duties

  • Teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students.

  • Follow developments within the subject area and the development of society in general that are important for the work at the university.

Appointment Period
The position can be held for a maximum of six years. An Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to Associate Professor. If the Assistant Professor is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted to and employed as Associate Professor.

 Qualifications Required

  • PhD in chemistry. Applicants who have obtained a PhD degree or achieved the equivalent competence in five years or less prior to the end of the application period will be given priority.
  • Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.
  • Applicants should have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising five weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment.
  • Documented ability to teach in English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail.

  • Personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking of applicants that fulfil the above-mentioned qualifications required

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise.

Research Expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration.

In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to documented research merits in macromolecular chemistry with use and deep understanding of macromolecular and polymer physics.

Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration.

In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in structure-property relationships and the ability to create interest in the topic among students.

Other Expertise
Demonstrated ability to attract competitive research funding and development of scientific independence will be considered as an advantage.

Personal capacity to positively contribute to a creative research environment through e.g. fruitful collaborations, by taking initiatives and contributing to further development of the research program of Macromolecular Chemistry will be considered.

Further information
In an overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience.
