Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Are you interested in working with seismic data, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a Research Engineer position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden’s largest and most versatile department of its kind with approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge. For more information: Department of Earth Sciences.

The Swedish National Seismic Network, SNSN (www.snsn.se), is part of the programme for Geophysics in the Department of Earth Sciences. SNSN operates 67 permanent seismic stations distributed across the country, from Veberöd in the south to Torneträsk in the north. Local, regional and global earthquakes are recorded, analysed and archived in the daily operation. The SNSN also runs an information service which provides support to society in case of natural disasters around the globe, such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcano eruptions. This service is widely used, by government agencies, media, the general public and companies, as well as international collaborators. A significant part of the work at SNSN is directed to development of analysis tools, international data sharing, maintenance work in the field and collaboration with seismic networks in Europe and beyond.

Duties
In a collaboration with the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co. (SKB), the SNSN will analyze seismic data from a local seismic network in the repository area in Forsmark. The research engineer will maintain and develop automatic processing of the data, perform manual analysis of the data and contribute to methodological developments of seismic data analysis. The Forsmark seismic network will be in a state of rapid development in the next years, both on hardware and software, and the research engineer is expected to contribute to that, sometimes in the field at Forsmark. The duties will be performed in close collaboration with SKB and involves meetings with, and reporting to, SKB.

Requirements
Studies at master level in seismology, geophysics, physics or scientific computing. Experience of analysis of seismic data. Knowledge of Linux/UNIX systems. Proficiency in written and spoken English. A security vetting will take place at SKB before employment, in compliance with the Protective security act.
