The Department of Earth Sciences offers education and research with a unique breadth and is considered in international evaluations to be one of Europe"s most complete geoscience departments. This breadth is represented by experienced teachers and researchers with expertise covering everything from rocks and volcanoes to earthquakes, weather, wind, and climate, from the evolution of life on Earth to dinosaurs, and from lakes to glaciers, carbon storage, and sustainable energy systems. www.geo.uu.se
The Program for Air, Water and Landscape Science, LUVAL, brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. In hydrology, we study surface and groundwater, their processes, and their effects on and for society. One focus is in water engineering where we study water quality and water treatment.
The proposal of the new EU Wastewater Directive emphasizes the need to exploit wastewater resources, use recycled wastewater, use renewable energy sources in the wastewater treatment sector, and contribute to circular economies. The treated wastewater is a sustainable water source that can be used either as technical water or for hydrogen production.
In our new project, we want to explore the technological potential, sector needs, challenges, and institutional forces and frameworks that influence the use of wastewater as technical water or for hydrogen production as an energy source. We are looking for a Ph.D. student to participate in the exploration of the needs, potential, challenges, and sustainability of using recycled wastewater as a source of technical water or for energy production in the form of hydrogen in Sweden. We are mainly looking for a student who is interested and able to use experimental and interdisciplinary systems analysis research methods to answer the research questions related to the topic.
