The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro biology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. Duties
A PhD position is available in Fredrik Swartling's, http://swartlinglab.org/, and Geraldine Giraud's research group at Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. We are looking for a highly motivated person with an interest in studies of the epigenetics of malignant childhood brain tumors. The work in the group is focused on developing methods for growing brain tumor cells as organoids, studying epigenetic changes and developing immunotherapies against the most common types of malignant brain tumors in children.

The doctoral position refers to own full-time studies for a maximum of 4 years. Holders of doctoral employment must primarily devote themselves to their own education at doctoral level, but other work such as training of students and administrative work may be included with a maximum of 20 percent of the employment. The appointment will be extended by the teaching period to allow for four years of full-time study at postgraduate level.

Requirements
The applicant must have a master's degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. medicine, biomedicine, molecular biology, pharmacy or immunology). Documented practical experience of experimental research work with cell culture, in vivo modeling (FELASA certificate or similar), histological analysis, work with flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy and quantitative PCR is strongly meritorious. Good oral and written English skills are required. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities that make the applicant suitable for the position.

Additional qualifications
Previous studies or research work with brain tumors or development of the brain is meritorious.
