Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 250 employees and has a turnover of 250 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website. (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1).

Duties
We are looking for a new PhD student to the Inorganic Chemistry Program. The research project is focused on new coating materials for fuel cells. These will be synthesized as thin films from the vapor using magnetron sputtering. The new materials will be characterized with x-ray diffraction (XRD), microscopy (SEM and TEM) and with different spectroscopic techniques such photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.  An important part of the project is to develop new types of coatings based on metals, carbon and nitrogen. Interaction with other research groups to model and characterize how the new materials work in fuel cells will be an essential part of the project. The project aims to clarify correlations between structure, chemical composition and properties. Some teaching on materials related undergraduate courses may be a part of the position.

Requirements
Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in research in materials chemistry. A suitable applicant has a master's degree in Materials Chemistry, Materials Physics or similar. The project involves many skills and an applicant should have a good knowledge in magnetron sputtering and analysis of thin film materials.  Documented proficiency in oral and written English is required. The applicant should want to work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment, and should have the social skills to work both in a team and independently. General requirements for the position are:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or has acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.

Application
The application should contain a letter where the applicant shortly describes themselves and their research interest (max 1 page), CV, and Master’s degree and / or excerpt of courses and grades from university studies.
