Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

The Alva Myrdal Center for Nuclear Disarmament (AMC), was established in 2021 at Uppsala University to provide education, research and policy support on disarmament issues. AMC studies the entire disarmament process; prerequisites and obstacles, negotiation and decision-making as well as implementation and verification. The center is located at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research.

Duties
The duties consist of, together with Working Group 1 at AMC (with project leader Isak Svensson), develop a database about nuclear weapons negotiations and leading the work with the collection of data, as well as collecting and coding information about nuclear weapons negotiations. Writing texts and research reports in English, as well as data management, including descriptive data analysis and visualization, will also be included in the duties. The work takes place in accordance with AMC's established coding rules and conceptual apparatus and is carried out in a small group, where the work requires a high degree of independent analytical capacity. Other tasks may be added based on the program's needs. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in peace and conflict studies, international relations or other related field
  • Experience with coding and data management
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to work independently
  • Good cooperation skills.

Additional qualifications

  • Documented experience working with the development of data sets (coding rules, scales, variable construction)
  • Knowledge of negotiations, negotiation processes and / or nuclear weapons issues
  • Master's degree in peace and conflict studies, international relations or another related field Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, until 7 June 2024 . Scope of employment; 100 %. Starting date 7 June 2023, or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
