The department is now looking for a research assistant (full-time position, 8 months employment), for the project "The Inside and Outside of Peacemaking" with project leader Isak Svensson. Start date 15 May 2023 or as otherwise agreed.

Project Description
The aim of the project is to contribute to a new dataset about the interaction between on the one hand civil society (and political parties) and on the other third-party mediators in peace negotiations. This will enable analysis of a series of issues concerning how mediators can create space for inclusive peace processes in civil war. The project will contribute by 1) providing the first systematic mapping of the empirical landscape of mediation-civil society interactions in armed conflicts; 2) collecting new data on the occurrence of mediation; 3) examining the extent to which different relationships between mediators and civil society organizations can contribute in explaining outcomes of peace processes. This project explores civil society-mediation dynamics, drawing on a unique database – the Non-Warring Actors in Peace Processes (NoWA) data. Building and creating synergies with on-going research projects, this project will be able to provide novel insights into the dynamics of mediators-civil society relationships.

Duties
Data collection and administrative tasks. The main work consists of collecting data on mediators’ and civil society's roles in civil peace negotiations, and their interaction, but also carrying out initial analysis of collected information, as well as editing and formatting of article manuscripts.
