Postdoctoral position focusing on patients’ self-monitoring and digital care

The employment is placed in the Participatory eHealth and Health Data research group at the department of Women’s and Children’s health. The research group is connected to Uppsala MedTech Science & Innovation (https://medtech.uu.se/), a interdisciplinary research center focusing on medical technology and eHealth. The group is led by Maria Hägglund, and studies implementation and use of e-health and new technology in healthcare and for self-care.

Duties
eHealth is an interdisciplinary research field encompassing research with a focus on how digital solutions can be used for self-care and within healthcare and social care to improve health and/or quality of care. The field includes studies on needs, design, implementation, and evaluation of eHealth in many different contexts, with many different stakeholders, and a wide range of research methods. This position will focus specifically on research on patients’ self-monitoring and patient-generated data, and how so called “patient lead users” or second generation e-patients use self-monitoring to understand and improve their health. The research will be performed in Sweden.

The person we offer the position to will work in a research project focusing on self-monitoring, and how patients can take a more active role in their health- and self-care. Self-care and self-monitoring within oncology will have a special focus. Work tasks include to in collaboration with already involved researchers monitor recruitment; participate in collection of both quantitative (mainly survey studies) and qualitative data through observations and interviews; participate in analysis of the gathered data; and to process and report results in scientific publications. Teaching can also be a part of the work, no more than 20% of the full-time work.

Requirements
For employment as a postdoctor you must have a doctor’s degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctor’s degree, within the area health informatics, implementation research (focusing on eHealth), or related research areas. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

The person we are looking for should be highly motivated with scientific merits in the relevant field. Previous research and experiences from self-monitoring and self-care in chronic diseases as well as experiences of both quantitative and qualitative methods are requirements for the position. Another requirement previous research about and with patient lead users or e-patients. The person is also required to have higher education in pedagogy.

Proficiency in written and spoken English and Swedish is a requirement. Personal characteristics are important for our choice of candidate; the applicant should be structured, analytical, careful, and have good collaboration skills.

Additional qualifications

  • Experience of studies of digital tools for self-care and/or self-monitoring
  • Experiences of collaboration in larger research projects
