Department
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. UCDP
The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research and UCDP is now looking for a part-time research assistant for the period 2 May 2023 – 20 April 2024.

Duties:
The tasks consist of collecting and coding information on organized violence from selected, mainly Portuguese-speaking, sources into the UCDP database, with a special focus on Latin America, especially Brazil. Text writing in English, as well as basic data management, will also be included in the tasks. The work follows the fixed coding rules and conceptualizations of the UCDP, and is made in a small group, where a high degree of independent analytical capacity is expected. Other tasks may also be included depending on UCDP needs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors’ degree in peace and conflict studies, international relations or other relevant field
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Good knowledge of organized violence in Latin America, especially Brazil
  • Documented experience of working with conflict data (coding/data management)
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Very good Portuguese in speech and writing
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to work independently
  • Good ability to collaborate.

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience of coding organized violence, especially Brazil.

Individual suitability will be strongly considered.
