The Department of History is a dynamic research environment, with a particular emphasis on early modern history, gender history, global history, digital humanities, history of racism, antisemitism and the Holocaust; see http://www.hist.uu.se. The department has some 80 teachers and researchers, and 800 students. The department also includes the Hugo Valentin Centre.

The department now announces one or two fully funded PhD positions where the holder will be an active member of the Gender and Work (GaW) research project at Uppsala University.

The history departments at Uppsala University and Stockholm University collaborate closely, and the PhD programme is to a high degree jointly taught. Consequently, the admittance process is coordinated and representatives of both universities take part in the selection process. Gender and Work (GaW) is a two-decades-long research project (2008–2029) currently financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) but with previous funding from the Wallenberg Foundations and the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. The goal of the project is to conduct empirical historical research into women’s and men’s work and to develop theoretical and methodological tools regarding work, including research infrastructure. Information about the project can be found at Start - Gender and Work - Uppsala universitet (uu.se) The GaW project now welcomes candidates who are interested in using the project’s methodology in studies of Eastern-European early modern societies or Southern-European early modern societies. The successful candidate will for instance have knowledge of court records and other social history sources. The candidate should also have an interest in teamwork.

Position
Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and are expected to participate actively in weekly seminars and workshops, etc. at the department and within the GaW group.

The position is a 4-year full-time employment which qualifies for all Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Requirements
To be eligible the applicant must have a Master’s Degree in the humanities relevant to research in history. We encourage applicants from all countries to apply. Seminars are in both Swedish and English. Note, however, that the PhD programme is bilingual and that basic knowledge in both Swedish and English is required. For the position(s) within the GaW project it is understood that the dissertation is written in English.

Please note that admission to a PhD programme at Uppsala University is highly competitive and that a completed Master’s Degree at the time of application is a prerequisite.

Application
Your application can be written in English or Swedish and should include: 1) a brief CV, outlining your academic progress to date; 2) a copy of your MA thesis; 3) a statement (of no more than 6 pages) outlining your proposed research (forskningsplan). This outline should describe your research question, how it is related to the current state of research and its relevance to the GaW project. The outline should also have a short discussion of possible historical sources for answering your question and methodological considerations regarding the potential of these sources; 4) an authorized copy of your Master’s degree and course grades (if the degree was taken at a Swedish university, a LADOK extract will suffice); 5) a copy of your BA thesis (if available); 6) an account of how long it took you to complete your MA thesis.
