Uppsala University’s Forum for Africa Studies (http://www.afrikastudier.uu.se/en/) is an interdisciplinary center with the aim of initiating, supporting and making visible Africa-related research within the university. The Forum facilitates contact between researchers and the spread of research on Africa between institutions and centers within Uppsala University, as well as with external partners. The Forum for Africa Studies runs research projects, organizes lectures and panel discussions, and leads a seminar series in Africa Studies.

The Forum for Africa Studies is housed by the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology (http://antro.uu.se/). Forum members also participate in the department’s courses in the field African Studies.

From 2023, the Forum for Africa Studies extends to all three disciplinary domains at Uppsala University: the humanities and social sciences, medicine and pharmacy, and science and technology, and forms part of Uppsala University’s Africa Initiative, which is supported with special funds from the Vice-Chancellor.

The Forum for Africa Studies is announcing two part-time research-coordinator positions. Applicants must hold a PhD and have good knowledge of research and research coordination. The two positions in total comprise the equivalent of one full-time appointment and thereby amount to approximately 50% each. There may be some flexibility required in terms of distribution between the two coordinators.

The research coordinators are expected to work independently, but in close collaboration with the Director, the other coordinators and other employees of the Forum for Africa Studies. The coordinators are expected to take initiative in developing the Forum and in applying for external funding for research projects. Knowledge of, and experience in research in, Africa is necessary for this position, as well as very good oral and written English. Knowledge of French is a merit, as the work repeatedly contains wide-ranging collaborations with French-speaking African countries.

Duties
The overall responsibility of the research coordinators is to initiate, coordinate and facilitate the ongoing work in the Forum’s secretariat (which consists of the Forum's director and other coordinators and employees of Forum). The secretariat constitutes scientific coordination, organizational support and intellectual feedback to the Forum’s board and other researchers involved in the Forum’s work. More specifically, the positions include planning, implementation and coordination of Forum’s many events within the framework of the Uppsala Graduate School in Africa Studies, including the coordination of the seminar series in Africa Studies. The work between the two coordinators will be distributed according to the following work areas: public events, the research school, Africa cooperation within higher education, and strategic work within various Africa initiatives at Uppsala University with respect to the EU and other actors.

Requirements

1. Doctoral degree
2. Documented experience of working with research coordination and seminar activities.
3. Knowledge of and experience with research in Africa as well as internationalization vis-à-vis the African continent.
4. Good ability to express oneself verbally and in writing in English.
5. Good social skills and proven capacity to cooperate. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The research coordinators are expected to be able to travel as part of their work duties.

Additional qualifications
Because the Forum for Africa Studies conducts extensive activities in French-speaking African countries, the ability to express oneself orally and in writing in French is meritorious. Basic knowledge of Swedish is also a merit.
