A position is available in the Department of Mathematics, to work with Associate Professor Cecilia Holmgren as the main supervisor in the mathematical areas Probability Theory and Combinatorics, more specifically Combinatorial Probability Theory. A background in Probability Theory and/or Combinatorics is an advantage.

Duties
The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at their own research education, which lasts for four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years. The aim of the research is to study various problems in combinatorial probability theory and to develop methods for the study of such problems. This includes, for example, random graphs, random trees, and probabilistic problems from the study of algorithms.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in mathematics, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The applicant must satisfy the above mentioned requirements before the starting date of the PhD position.

The candidate should have a good command of spoken and written English, knowledge of Swedish is not required.

Additional qualifications
A good knowledge of probability theory and / or combinatorics will be an advantage.

  • A copy of the master's degree dissertation (or a preliminary outline thereof) or other written work in mathematics or related field.

The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Salary according to local agreement for PhD students. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 September 2023 or as agreed (earlier start date possible). Placement: Uppsala
