Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

Research Assistant in the research group Molecular Geriatrics

The Research group is part of Molecular Geriatrics unit located within Rudbeck laboratory. It is also tightly tied to the memory clinic located at the university hospital, Akademiska hospital, in Uppsala. The focus of the research unit is diagnostic and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases. Research projects are conducted with other research groups located at the Uppsala University, in Sweden, and internationally; as well as with pharmaceutical companies.

Oxidative stress and metabolic shift are associated with diverse disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A key component of these alterations are mitochondrial dysfunctions which may contribute, and even drive progression of the disease.  There is growing evidence that mitochondrial dysfunctions are caused by metabolic alterations, which in some cases are irreversible. This project focuses on investigating and modulating metabolic processes linked to mitochondria in human derived cell model systems, with the aim to identify approaches that might delay AD related changes.
