Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

The employee will work as part of Molecular Geriatrics, whose activities are carried out at the Rudbeck laboratory and are closely linked to the clinical activities at the Academic Hospital's memory service. The focus group that the employee will be part of does interdisciplinary work using with stem cells and multiomics analyzes as a starting point. Our research complements the larger activities of the Department of Molecular Geriatrics, which is mainly focused on therapy and diagnostics of neurodegenerative diseases. We collaborate with university groups both in Sweden and internationally, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies. The role of metabolism in across development and aging, and its disturbances in context of diseases and environmental insults are yet again a popular research topic. Behind this are recent work demonstrating previously unrecognized or often omitted roles metabolism has on neurobiological system homeostasis. Advancements in single cell approaches are fueling the characterization of intricate relationships between spatial and temporal control of metabolites, energy flux, and the role of local microenvironments play in function of individual cells and the broader networks.

In this project the student will work with characterization of metabolic processes in complex human iPSC derived 2D and 3D models (possible work with animals as well), using cutting edge metabolic/lipidomic assessment tool, including those applicable for single cell characterization. The goal is to identify targets for metabolic modulation of senescence, aging and neurological disease progression. A large focus will be given to neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease.
