Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences

The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with more than 250 employees and over 900 additional coworkers connected via the Uppsala University Hospital. The Department of Medical Sciences has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a number of different areas. The research carried out at the department is performed in close connection with the clinical activities at the Uppsala University Hospital, which includes both basic studies on the causes of a variety of illnesses and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More information about the Department of Medical Sciences can be found at www.medsci.uu.se

Duties
We are looking for a skillful, ambitious and highly motivated researcher/post-doc to work within Sören Lehmann’s hematological research group in a project on epigenetic studies of leukemia. The aim of the study is to define leukemia specific molecular and functional changes in leukemia cells with a focus on epigenetic mechanisms. This project will improve our understanding on why normal blood cells develop into leukemia cells and how epigenetic changes in the cells can be used as biomarkers and/or as target structures for new and more effective treatments for leukemia. The project includes analyzes of leukemia cells using whole genome sequencing by ChIP-seq, ATAC-Seq, Hi-C and RNA-seq followed by data analysis and validations of key results in wet lab studies including CRISPR-Cas9 editing.

The immediate research environment is the translational acute leukemia research group of Sören Lehmann. The group works with basic as well as translational and clinical research, especially focused on acute myeloid leukemia. This is an inspiring and interdisciplinary work environment which includes basic scientists as well as clinical doctors and biostatisticians. The Lehmann group works in close collaborations with other excellent research groups at Uppsala University, Karolinska Institute and within international networks. The project has academic as well as commercial collaborators.

Requirements
The position requires a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. The passed PhD should be within a relevant research subject such as genetics, epigenetics, cancer and/or hematology related molecular biology. Desired skills include experience in basic laboratory techniques for analysis of DNA, RNA and protein and experience from bioinformatic handling of data. An emphasis will be given to scientific excellence within the field as well as organization and cooperation skills.

Additional qualifications
Experience in epigenetic techniques and/or and statistics is a strength.
