Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 290 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Project description
The main duty involved in a postdoctoral position is to conduct research. This research project aims to investigate the proton reactivity at the “outer surface” and “inner surface” of layered transition metal oxides in contact with water and aqueous electrolytes. Our approach applies finite-field density functional theory (DFT)-based molecular dynamics (MD) and atomistic machine learning (ML), as recently developed and applied in the TeC group at Uppsala (https://tec-group.github.io). This computational study will be complemented by experimental works through collaboration with Augustyn’s group at North Carolina State University.

This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, https://wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. The recruited early-stage researcher will also be a part of the WISE Graduate School (https://wise-materials.org/research/graduate-school/), an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers and industry.

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.

Requirements
For employment as a postdoc, the applicant should have obtained a PhD or an international equivalent degree within the field of physics or other for the position relevant field, no more than three (3) years before the start of the employment.

Applicants should have very good knowledge and practical experience in molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations of condensed phase systems. Experience with the CP2K suite of programs (www.cp2k.org) will be necessary. Applicants should have very good oral and written proficiency in English.

The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance is attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the amount of publications.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Desirable qualifications
Experience with atomistic machine learning.
