Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Full-time permanent position with starting date as soon as possible or as agreed upon.  A six month probationary period may be applied.

You will work primarily within the projects run by the Tribomaterials group within the division of applied materials science, but also within other projects that use the equipment that the tribology group is responsible for. The research on tribomaterials spans technology, materials, chemistry and physics, and is often close to applications. Usually, the projects also involve companies and/or other academic parties.

Work duties
The overall tasks consist of:

  • Work actively in research projects regarding tribological experiments or testing of materials, surface layers or components, as well as evaluation and tribological analysis both before and after testing.
  • Evaluation and analysis primarily with SEM, EDS, FIB, ESCA, light microscopy and profilometry.
  • Active work with development of new, as well as modification of existing equipment for tribological testing.
  • Responsibility for operation and maintenance of certain equipment for tribological testing or sample preparation.
  • Responsibility for operation and maintenance of certain laboratory premises.
  • Some teaching linked to materials analysis, microscopy, experimental laboratory work, or related topics.
  • Give introduction to analysis techniques and testing methods for new doctoral students and graduate workers.
  • Responsibility for internal and external research assignments, including reporting.
  • Participation in work with external contacts.

Qualification requirements
PhD in materials science. Documented many years of experience and competence in tribology and tribological testing, including development and maintenance of equipment, as well as relevant surface analysis methods, with a focus on analysis of wear mechanisms and on how the structure and function of materials is modified  in tribological contact, including the formation of tribofilms.

We require good skills in oral and written English.

Additional qualifications
Teaching experience is meritorious

Great importance will be placed on the ability to carry out and develop current tasks, the ability to contribute to a positive development of the activities and the ability to cooperate well both within academia and with industry.

We assume that you want to take responsibility, can run several activities at the same time, are innovative, meticulous and have a genuine interest in tribological materials and applications.

We put great emphasis on your personal qualities and you must be self-motivated, have the ability to lead and run parallel projects and be able to collaborate with other researchers. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured and that you can work carefully and efficiently both individually and in groups.
