Uppsala University, Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering

Postdoctoral position in Industrial Engineering & Management with a specialization in Project Management & Project Governance

The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Industrial Engineering, Quality Science and Management, and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has a strong and international research environment and has approximately 80 employees with research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. This position will be located at the division of Industrial Engineering in Uppsala. For more information, see the departments webpage.

Industrial Engineering and Management is a broad, interdisciplinary subject that spans several sub-areas ranging from organization and management, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as industrial and social marketing within technology and innovation-intensive activities to automation and optimization, to machine design, production and production systems.

The new Swedish competence centre ANItA (Academic-industrial Nuclear technology Initiative to Achieve a sustainable energy future) integrates expertise among the leading Swedish universities and leading Nordic companies in the nuclear energy sector to introduce nover nuclear power technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Main partners involved are Uppsala University, Chalmers, KTH, Vattenfall, Uniper, Fortum, Westinghouse, Studsvik Nuclear and the Swedish Energy Agency.

Within ANItA we are looking for a postdoc researcher and offer a strong research environment, a unique industrial application potential, and excellent opportunities for international partnerships.

Overall research project objective and duties
The research investigates how risks of SMR projects could be mitigated and gives preliminary answers to the question "are SMRs viable solutions in decarbonising energy production?" Conventional projects for nuclear power plants have showed difficulties to meet deadlines and time schedules as well as keeping the budget. The idea behind SMRs is to reduce time, uncertainty and complexity due to the shift from "constructed on site" to the mindset of "installed on site". But the question remains if this is possible as it requires new financing models, new roles and responsibilities of project actors, new digital tools etc.

Together with the research team we anticipate you to work with tasks such as:

  • -Investigate how project and construction management is affected when serial production of system/components/modules is introduced.
  • -Analyse what kind of synergies and learnings can be found from other complex industries.
  • -Assess and develop new financial models for SMR projects.
  • -Assess and develop new project management methods for SMR projects.

Given that no SMR reactors have been built in Sweden or elsewhere the study is expected to draw upon previous experience of large-scale nuclear construction projects, adequate benchmarking industries and other types of mega projects. This project will not only produce academic results but also contribute to improved industrial management practices of high-risk projects concerning risk and risk mitigation while constructing SMRs in a Swedish context.

Requirements
For the position as postdoc we require you to have a PhD degree, preferable within industrial engineering & management, industrial management, innovation management, industrial dynamics, construction management focusing on project management and project organizing, business administration or similar.

Pedagogical experience is required for the position, as the position included teaching.

Very good oral and written English is a requirement.

Additional qualifications
Documented experiences from project organizing is a merit. Knowledge about energy systems and nuclear energy and knowledge in Swedish is also a merit.

Departmental duties, usually teaching, will require up to 20% of employment. More information about postgraduate positions are available on the Department's website, http://www.teknik.uu.se and technical science faculty website http://www.teknat.uu.se. The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal importance. Research expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching.
