Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind with approximately 250 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science (LUVAL); geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; (NRHU); petrology, mineralogy and tectonics (MPT); paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge.

The Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences (LUVAL) connects research and education within meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis and physical geography. See https://www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/ for more information.

Description
ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System - is a new European research infrastructure for quantifying and understanding the greenhouse gas balance of the European continent and of adjacent regions. The infrastructure is built up as a collaboration of nationally operated measurement stations in 17 European countries. ICOS Sweden (<http://www.icos-sweden.se>) is the Swedish contribution to this European effort. High-precision, standardized observations of the exchange of greenhouse gases and heat between the Earth's surface and its atmosphere form an essential basis for understanding of our planet's present, past and future climate. The aim of ICOS is therefore to construct, equip and operate a network of standardized long-term, high precision integrated monitoring stations for atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and fluxes of for example CO2 and CH4.

ACTRIS- The Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure, is a pan-European research infrastructure, with activities in 22 European countries. ACTRIS consists of a network of stations for short-lived air pollutants with impacts on climate, including particles, reactive trace gases like ozone and nitrous oxides. Swedish ACTRIS (https://www.actris.se/)  are presently collocating with ICOS stations, and the station on Gotland is presently under development.
