Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - BMC

Up to 2 postdoctoral researcher positions in mass spectrometric chemical biology, microbiome metabolism and metabolomics for biomarker discovery.

Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. You can find more information about us here.

These postdoctoral positions in mass spectrometric chemical biology and metabolomics for microbiome investigation are available in the laboratory of Associate Professor Daniel Globisch. The Globisch laboratory is an international and multidisciplinary research group. Our research focus lies on the development of new methodologies to enhance the scope of quantitative and qualitative metabolomics-based research to simplify the discovery of disease-specific small molecule biomarkers in human samples (Example literature: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 202160, 23232-23240; 2020, 59, 14342; 2018, 57, 13805; 2021; Chem. Sci. 2018, 9, 6233; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 2013, 110, 4218).
This highly interdisciplinary project will include newly developed techniques at the interface of Chemistry and Biology with a combination of metabolomics-based analysis, mass spectrometric analysis of metabolites in biological samples, metabolic pathway analysis, and Chemical Biology techniques. Our team is currently searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers with passion and enthusiasm for science to support our ongoing interdisciplinary research projects to identify metabolic biomarkers and elucidate microbiome metabolism using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics.

Duties
The postdoctoral fellows will work on developing new methods for the analysis of metabolites with mass spectrometry and metabolomics techniques. These methods will be applied for the discovery and analysis of microbiome metabolites and biomarkers for disease. The postdoctoral work will include metabolomics data analysis as well as collaboration with doctoral students, students and collaborators from different fields. The postdoctoral positions will be 100% research.

Requirements
The applicant must hold a PhD degree and should have expertise in at least three of the following areas: Chemical Biology, Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, and mass spectrometric analysis of metabolites, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree the above listed topics. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the abilities necessary to develop within the project.

Additional qualifications
The successful candidate will preferably have laboratory experience in Chemical Biology, Bioorganic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry with documented experience in at least two of the following areas: metabolomics, Organic Chemistry, mass spectrometric analysis of biological samples, and bioanalysis. Good English speaking, reading and writing skills are required. Scores from IELTS or TOEFL are desirable but not mandatory at the time of applying.
