The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

The successful candidate will work in the Division of Theoretical Physics, which at present consists of thirteen senior faculty members, as well as several postdocs and PhD students. The group conducts research on a wide range of topics in theoretical high energy physics: from string theory to gravitational physics, to scattering amplitudes and conformal field theory. The presence of a large number of both senior and junior members offers ample opportunities for growth and exchange to prospective candidates. The division of Theoretical Physics also enjoys close ties to the Geometry and Physics group, which offer further opportunities to interact with professional mathematicians on research topics related to the research activities involved with this position.

The PhD student will undertake a research project under the supervision of Prof. Pietro Longhi, on a range of topics across formal aspects of quantum field theory, string theory and their applications to mathematics.

Duties
The PhD student will carry out original research in the field of theoretical high energy physics, and will be responsible for publishing results in peer-reviewed research journals. The student will also contribute to the activities of the group by participating in various activities, such as research seminars.

Requirements
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in Theoretical Physics, awarded by the time the position starts. The prospective student should also have an excellent academic track-record solid communication skills in English.

Appointment as a graduate student requires that the holder is admitted or will be admitted to PhD studies, where the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Additional qualifications
A background in any area of theoretical physics (string theory, condensed matter theory, mathematical physics, particle theory, supersymmetry, conformal field theory) or mathematics (algebraic geometry, vertex operator algebras) is desirable. A demonstrated interest in original research is a plus.
