Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://icm.uu.se.

The position is located in the research group of Laura Gunn within Molecular Biophysics (for more information see https://icm.uu.se/molekylar-biofysik/).

Duties
The employee will be a part of the ongoing research in the Gunn Lab, which aims to boost the efficiency of photosynthetic carbon assimilation by taking advantage of natural variation in the structure-function of carbon-fixing enzymes from different organisms. This position involves participation in an international collaboration to develop beam-sweeping fixed-target serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) at the European XFEL (EuXFEL). The main duties are to conduct research. Teaching and/or administration duties (including coordinating with collaborators) may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.

Requirements
For this position, you must have a PhD degree in Structural Biology or Biophysics, or an area that the employer considers to be equivalent. The position requires prior experience with recombinant protein expression and purification. A demonstrably high level of competence in macromolecular protein crystallography and small angle scattering is essential. Candidates must have experience with processing crystal data and using structure determination and visualisation software (e.g. coot, ccp4, Phenix). Candidates must also have experience with basic biophysical/biochemical techniques for sample characterisation e.g. DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering), CD (Circular Dichroism), ITC (Isothermal Titration Calorimetry). Since the research is conducted in an international environment, excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is an absolute requirement. Personal characteristics such as interpersonal skills, curiosity, a passion for discovery, independence and an ability to work as part of a team are also important factors.

Additional qualifications
Prior experience in the following is considered advantageous: (i) molecular and cell biology; (ii) protein-ligand interactions; (iii) data collection at X-ray failities (either syncrotron or XFEL).

Your application is preferably written in English and must contain:

  1. CV that contain all relevant information regarding skills and experiences and a complete publication list.
  2. Diplomas.
  3. Contact information to at least one and preferably two reference persons that we can contact if needed. Please state your professional relationship to these persons (for example, former supervisor).
