Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies.

One PhD position is available in the laboratories of Professor Jan Streuff at the Department of Chemistry - BMC. The project deals with the development of new catalytic bond activation reactions and their application to certain classes of compounds.

Duties
PhD students with employment in our department are normally expected to teach and participate in general departmental work, such as instrument maintenance, to a level corresponding to a maximum of 20% of the employment time. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in all aspects of the research, tasks will include the synthesis of reaction precursors and catalysts, reaction optimization and application, analysis and interpretation of the results, full characterization of new products, precise documentation, as well as reporting the results on a regular basis and forward planning.

Requirements

  •  To be eligible for doctoral education, a basic higher education equivalent to at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, or essentially equivalent competences acquired in some other way, is required.   • To be admitted to the doctoral education programme in Chemistry with specialization in organic chemistry, 90 ECTS credits in chemistry or courses relevant to the chemistry field, including 40 ECTS credits in organic chemistry at second-cycle level, or essentially equivalent competences acquired in some other way, are required.   • Very good English proficiency in speech and writing.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the abilities necessary to develop within and acquire the doctoral education.

Additional qualifications
You should have a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry or equivalent. Hands-on experience with NMR spectroscopic analysis and working under inert gas atmosphere as well as a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry will be considered as advantage. Experience from research (for example BSc and MSc thesis projects, academic internships, and company research) will be seen as a strong merit. The ability of critical and analytical thinking are necessities and will be valued at the selection of candidates.
