Researcher position in biomedical engineering with focus on additive manufacturing of degradable alloys
BmS is a research group in the Division of Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Uppsala University. The focus of the group is on development and characterization of new biomaterials for applications mainly in orthopaedics, with a specific focus on additive manufacturing (3D-printing). There are currently approximately 20 people in the research group.
More information on the profile of the research group can be found at:
http://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/bms/
You will be based in Prof. Cecilia Persson's research group, which specializes in developing and evaluating new biomaterials for future use in primarily orthopedics (http://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/bms/).
The position includes work within AM4Life which is a VINNOVA-supported Competence Centre that gathers more than 20 partners in academia, industry and the public sector to support competence development in additive manufacturing for the life sciences. The centre is led by Prof. Persson and is funded by academia, industry and VINNOVA in equal parts, with a total budget of approx. 100 MSEK and will run for 5 years in a first instance, between 2020-2025, and engage experts within academia and industry with a passion for 3D-printing with the ultimate goal of developing new technologies to improve people’s lives.
Project description
The project is a part of AM4Life, and focuses on development of new degradable alloys through additive manufacturing, and in particular powder bed fusion by laser beam (PBF-LB). The envisaged future applications of these alloys include those of biomaterials, and the materials will therefore be evaluated with this in mind.
Work duties
The work duties within the project include development of new alloys through additive manufacturing, and in particular PBF-LB, as well as new powder formulations for AM. Development of process parameters and characterization of the materials are included, such as chemical composition, microstructure, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, amongst other things. We are looking for a talented and creative person with a broad spectrum of skills to develop these materials and evaluate their applicability within the mentioned application area.
Qualification requirements
PhD degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or a related subject. The candidate should have a good knowledge of and documented experience of additive manufacturing of metals as well as characterization of the same to be able to develop the materials and apply them to the above application area. Multiple years of experience in additive manufacturing of degradable alloys is needed. Experience with neutron and synchrotron measurements is needed.
Good writing and communication skills in English are required.
Personal characteristics like the capacity to lead and advance projects while simultaneously interacting with other researchers and industrial partners are very important. The applicant should be determined, structured and able to work efficiently both individually and as part of a team.
Additional qualifications
Experience with additive manufacturing and characterization of alloys for biomedical applications is considered a merit.
Application
The application should contain a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, publication list, and copies of diplomas, course transcripts including grades.
