The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://icm.uu.se.
A postdoctoral position in computational chemistry is available in David van der Spoel’s research group. The group works on development of force fields for molecular dynamics simulations. Large-scale quantum chemistry calculations are combined with databases of experimental data as the foundation of the work. We use an in-house developed software-library to refine our models. The force field are tested using simulations of liquids and biological systems.

Duties
Perform high-throughput molecular simulations of chemical and biological systems and analyze the results by comparison with experimental data or data from quantum chemistry calculations. We study, for example, the physical properties of liquids and gases as part of the development of a new force field for molecular dynamics simulations. Development of code in C++ and scripting in Python. Parameterization of force fields.
Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor, you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree, in chemistry, physics or similar, with specialization in e.g. physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, molecular dynamics simulations or equivalent. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Very good programming skills are required in particular in C++11 and Python.
Additional qualifications
Experience of working with big data or high-performance computing is a plus. Experience of project work in a team together with other students, graduate students or researchers.
About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as soon as possible or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
