The Department of Earth Sciences conducts research and education that ranges from climate mitigation and natural resources management, to issues about the Earth"s core and atmosphere. We work in an exciting, expansive, transdisciplinary international environment (see www.geo.uu.se). The department"s Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Program aims at providing knowledge on how to protect and utilize natural resources in a sustainable way, in the intersection between natural and social systems, where science and policy interact. The program includes a unit for Climate Change Leadership (CCL), which primarily studies climate governance with a transdisciplinary approach, with an increasing focus on other environmental governance issues, including on biodiversity and other ecosystem services. The Zennström visiting guest professorship in climate change leadership is also located to CCL.

The present PhD student position is located to Uppsala within CCL and the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Program. The focus is placed on Biodiversity and Landscape Governance.

Duties
The PhD position is part of the new research program LANDPATHS (The multifunctional landscapes of the future: barriers and drivers for transformation pathways), funded by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in 2022-2027 (see https://www.geo.uu.se/research/natural-resources-sustainable-development/ongoing-research/landpaths/). The program aims to promote and provide knowledge on sustainable and integrated practises in landscape planning and management. The PhD student will primarily work in the subproject “Transformative landscape governance pathways”, which explores questions regarding landscape and biodiversity governance and policy in general, and transformative pathways for forest, agricultural, sea and coast, urban or mountain landscapes. The work includes collaboration with other PhD students as well as senior researchers in other subprojects in LANDPATHS. The work will span from policy-related studies to participatory research with stakeholders in Sweden. The PhD student is also expected to help organising and coordinating activities in which stakeholders take part, as well as to actively contribute to communication and other outreach activities.

Requirements
The applicant shall have a university science degree (MSc) in environmental sciences or sustainable development, including a political science or similar component, and shall have research interests relating to the LANDPATHS program, including good understanding of landscape and biodiversity challenges and strategies. The successful candidate will have good knowledge on and experiences of governance and policy issues, for example environmental governance, transformation or public policy theories, policy evaluation and analysis, futures thinking methodology and transdisciplinary studies. Good language skills in both Swedish and English are required.

Additional qualifications
Skills or experiences in public policy-making, civil society, transdisciplinary projects, organisation of dialogue processes, workshop facilitation, interviews and interview methods, and public communication are advantageous.
