Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Please visit: www.geo.uu.se for more information about the department.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Duties
G. Messori’s research group hosts two H2020 research projects and several national projects, focussing on multiple aspects of mid and high latitude climate extremes. More information on ongoing research can be found at gmessori.eu.. The post-doc will work within the frame of G. Messori’s ERC grant: “Compound Climate Extremes in North America and Europe: from Dynamics to Predictability”. The aim of the work is to identify the large-scale atmospheric drivers of compound extremes in Europe and North America and study their predictability. There is considerable freedom to focus on different approaches, from indicators issued from dynamical systems theory to data-driven/machine learning or numerical forecast modelling tools. The post-doc, if s/he so wishes, will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching/supervising duties.

Requirements
PhD degree in Climate Science, Earth Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, or related disciplines or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects, as well as basic knowledge of weather forecasting or numerical forecasts in other fields. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Additional qualifications
Documented experience in numerical forecast models, data-driven/machine learning approaches and/or performing statistical analyses of climate extremes, as well as appropriate computing and coding skills are a merit. The ranking of the candidates will also accord weight to evidence of independent thinking, quality of peer-reviewed publications and ability to interact effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment. Experience in private sector employment in fields relevant to the position will also be positively evaluated.

The application should contain:

  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A short research statement (maximum 2 pages) describing how the candidate’s past experience is relevant to the topic of the project and describing some existing knowledge gaps within the project’s research scope.
  • A list of publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Two references (names and full contact details, including telephone number).
