The Department of Informatics and Media at Uppsala University conducts education and research in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland in Visby. The Department’s faculty studies various aspects of the conditions, opportunities and consequences of the use of digital technologies, in relation to individuals, organizations, and societal institutions. The PhD student will examine various development processes regarding digital infrastructures within institutional contexts. This is a context where laws, regulations and standards form an important basis for the development process. This applies to the development of digital infrastructures in different sectors of society, e.g. health, finance, and social security. The research will be practice- and design-oriented.

Duties
Doctoral studies comprises a set of PhD courses and a comprehensive research project that is to be reported and publicly defended in the form of a doctoral dissertation. Successful fulfilment of the course work and the research project will be awarded by a PhD degree in Information Systems, from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Uppsala University. Additionally, the PhD student will be enrolled into Sweden’s National Research School on Management and Information Technology. This enrolment will provide the student with a set of additional benefits such as the access to specific PhD courses, mandatory participation in bi-annual research student conferences, and the access to a large network of junior and senior researchers. The PhD student will be supervised by two senior researchers.

Key qualifications
We are looking for a PhD student with a genuine interest in and good knowledge in the design of digital infrastructures (information infrastructures). Knowledge of system development and system architecture.

The work requires the ability to interpret Swedish laws, statutes and governmental reviews, which is why the applicant needs to have very good knowledge of Swedish. The person who gets the job must be able to speak, read and write Swedish at a level that is necessary to conduct research on Swedish written material.

Good ability to communicate in English is also a requirement. We are looking for a person with the ability to work independently and professionally in a group, who can communicate with colleagues from different academic disciplines and take initiatives, and independently organize her/his work.

Basic eligibility
You have completed a degree at advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 credits (ECTS), of which at least 60 credits (ECTS) at advanced level, or acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

Special eligibility
You have passed results on courses of 90 credits in areas relevant to information systems, or have acquired corresponding knowledge in another way. A suitable background is a master's degree with a focus on information systems, computer and systems science, informatics or equivalent. Other meriting qualifications

Experience in:

  1. requirements elicitation, conceptual modeling, programming and development of digital services;
  2. qualitative research methods;
  3. professional work experience from industry and/or governmental organizations;
  4. experience of teaching at university level.
