Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. You can find more information about us here.

Project description
In this project we aim to learn how novel function arise in evolving protein sequences. We will explore the evolution of function among de-novo proteins. We will use phage display to explore the binding function of newly evolved proteins. We will characterize identified interactions using biophysical, structural and cell based approaches. The project is a joint endeavor with three collaborating groups (Erich Bornberg-Bauer, Münster; Florian Hollfelder, Cambridge; Klara Hlouchova, Prague).

Duties
The position will include expression and purification of recombinant proteins, phage display, affinity measurements, and potentially crystallization. You may also be involved in some bioinformatic analysis and cell based experiments. The position will include summarizing results and presenting them through oral and written presentations, including manuscript writing.

Requirements
PhD degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or structural biology, or related fields,  or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above listed topics. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

You should have a strong background in protein biochemistry.

As the project is a joint endeavor between several groups it is required that you have are flexible, have the ability to work independently on the project, as well as the ability to cooperate with other members of the team. You are further expected to take initiative, be achievement oriented and have high integrity.

Additional qualifications
You should have experience of expressing and purifying protein, and conducting affinity measurements. The project may include handling larger datasets, and hence it is desirable that you have experience of large-scale data analysis. Experience of cell based assays is also valued.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1st October 2022 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
