A position as a researcher is available in professor Åsa Mackenzie´s laboratory where we work with neurocircuitry analysis of the basal ganglia and associated structures. We use viral-genetic, histological and molecular biological methods (including transcriptomics) in rodents to analyze the neuronal building blocks of the basal ganglia with great precision. We also use transgenics and optogenetics methodology to stimulate and inhibit distinct nerve cells and assess activity, both on the neuronal and whole organism level (including behavior analysis). Our goal is to increase current understanding of the basal ganglia in motor and non-motor functions (including aversive and depressive states) in normal conditions and in Parkinson´s disease.

We are now recruiting a well-motivated, knowledgeable researcher who is eager to perform advanced laboratory analyses and to actively participate in our group´s work towards increased knowledge of the brain´s complex neuronal circuits.

Duties
Perform research on the basal ganglia and associated structures in movement regulation. This includes to: Plan, perform and analyse histological and molecular biology experiments in transgenic mice, including retrograde and anterograde viral-genetic tracings, projection analysis and transcriptomics analysis.

Develop methodology for combination of various histological techniques with viral-genetic tracing methods, including anterograde and retrograde tracing of projections.

Develop methodology for detection of projections in complex networks.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a researcher you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in preclinical, experimental medicine, pharmacology or natural sciences with focus on the affective or motor circuits within the brain (neuroscience/neurobiology or similar). 

You must have documented experience of:

  • Mouse genetics and viral-genetic methods.
  • Histological methods (including sectioning) on mRNA and protein levels.
  • Molecular biology methodology, at least basal level.
  • Handling transgenic mice.
  • Stereotaxic injections and relevant adjoining surgery.
  • Writing scientific texts and papers in English.

You must have a FELASA certificate or equivalent. You must possess excellent knowledge in written and spoken English. You must have excellent ability to work both independently and in a team.

Additional qualifications
Experience and knowledge of:

  • Methods development for histological and transcriptome-based detection.
  • The basal ganglia and associated structures.
  • Computer software e.g. Windows, Office, Adobe image program.
  • Statistical programs GraphPadPrism, Statistica and Excel.
  • Processing large data amounts.

Certificate for virus work in rodents, security level II and postdoc in Neuroscience are especially meriting.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 24 months. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
