Duties
Research in American Literature and Culture includes all literatures and related disciplines produced on the territory of what is now the United States from colonial times to the present, along with the work of Americans abroad. Some recent and current research areas include American literature and globalization, transnational American literature, the literature and culture of neoliberalism, American literature and the security state, postwar avant-garde poetry and poetics, the environmental and energy humanities, the New American Cinema, punk rock, and Archipelagic American Studies.

Our doctoral students in the Department of English are integrated into our research environment. Further, doctoral students are also expected to join national and international networks by, for instance, attending conferences where they present their research. Abstracts of recently completed doctoral theses are available online.

Uppsala University invites applicants for a doctoral position in English, specializing in American Literature. We are looking for a dynamic and committed scholar who works well independently and who is willing to cooperate in and to contribute to the community of researchers working in the department. For this position, we particularly encourage research proposals on nineteenth-century American literature and culture considered broadly or on transnational American literature, two areas that may also be fruitfully combined in the same proposal.

To be eligible to apply for the doctoral position, the applicant must meet all requirements for a Master’s Degree in English before the application date. We encourage applicants from all countries to apply. The doctoral dissertation is to be written in English.

Please note that admission to a PhD programme at Uppsala University is highly competitive and that a Master’s Degree in English at the time of application is a prerequisite.

The successful candidate will pursue doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and will be expected to participate actively in departmental activities including, for instance, work-in-progress seminars, workshops, staff meetings, etc.

The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally). All doctoral students have dedicated office space and are expected to be present full-time in the Department.
